Farhan Lalji

Coach Lalji is entering his 20th year of coaching BC High School Football, his fifth as a head coach. Prior to launching the NWSS football program, he spent two years as an assistant coach at Vancouver College, with their varsity team reaching the AAA Championship game both years. From 1987 to 2000, Lalji coached at Burnaby Central HS, the last five years as offensive co-ordinator. He is an NCCP Level III certified coach and has been a guest coach at UBC, along with numerous camps in Canada and the USA. He has coached over 35 players that have gone on to play college football. Lalji is a graduate of SFU and played football at Burnaby Central HS and with the Vancouver Meralomas (BCFC). Following the 2004 season he was named runner up for the NFL/CFL National High School Coach of the Year. Lalji is a vice president of the BCSSFA and is currently employed as a national reporter for TSN and CTV. He and his wife Mary live in New Westminster.
Brian Higgins
Defensive Coordinator
Coach Higgins is in his first year on the Hyacks staff, but he is hardly a rookie coach. His coaching career began 26 years ago on the North Shore with the GSL. Since then he has been an assistant with the UBC Thunderbirds (1993) and a head coach with the Westside Warriors. Most recently he spent 11 years the head coach at South Delta HS where his team reached the AAA semi-finals twice. He spent 10 years on the BCSSFA board of directors and is a level 3 certified coach. Higgins is the Supervising Lawyer for the Law Students Legal Advice Program at UBC. He and his wife Jennifer live in Surrey.
Garfield Shirley
Running Backs
Coach Shirley is starting his fifth year of coaching football, all with the Hyacks. After a decorated high school football career in Toronto, he played at Simon Fraser University in 1986-87. He also played for the Vancouver Meralomas (BCFC) from 1987 to 1989. He is currently a deputy sherrif for the province of B.C.
Chad Oatway
Linebackers, JV Head Coach
Coach Oatway is in his fourth season of coaching with the Hyacks, and his second as JV Head Coach. He is also a certified personal trainer and runs the Hyacks off-season strength and conditioning program. Last season he was the key reason for the turnaround in the JV program. He has also been a coach at both the UBC and SFU football camps. A product of the Kamloops HS football program, he was also an outstanding linebacker at the University of British Columbia. Along the way, he also played at Reidley College (CA) and with the Abbotsford Airforce (BCFC). Oatway is a graduate of UBC with a Bachelor of Human Kinetics and is a teacher at NWSS.
Colby Fackler
Receivers
Coach Fackler is in his seventh year of coaching, his third at NWSS. He's also the JV Offensive Co-ordinator. His playing career included a season at UBC (1999) and three seasons at College of the Sequoias (CA) from 1996 to 98 where he was also the captain of the track and field team. Fackler graduated from Burnaby Central HS in 1996 and was named AA Provincial All-star and Conference Offensive player of the Year in his senior season. He currently works as a project manager for Beyer-Brown. He and his wife Bronwyn live in Vancouver.
Andrew McKechnie
Offensive Line
Coach "Mac" is entering his fiftheenth year of coaching, his fifth at NWSS. His first ten years were spent as an assistant at Burnaby Central, including three years as offensive co-ordinator. He is an NCCP Level II certified coach and has been a staff coach at the Western Canadian All-Star football camp. He played football at Burnaby Central and with the Vancouver Trojans (BCFC). McKechnie has a Bachelor of Technology degree from BCIT and is currently employed as a database analyst for Trapeeze Software.
Jerred Friday
Defensive Backs
Coach Friday begins his coaching career this season at NWSS. His playing career was highlighted by a full scholarship to Rutgers University (NJ) in the NCAA's Big East conference, where he played as a true freshman with the likes of NFL All-pro TE, LJ Smith, and against names such as Michael Vick and Jeremy Shockey. Prior to that, he was an All-star LB during his senior season in high school, capping his four years at Burnaby Central. He is currently a journeyman sprinkler fitter with Active Fire and Safety.
